Warren's boxers to get exposure in North America through Top Rank-ESPN tie-up
Frank Warren, the UK boxing promoter (pictured), has struck a multi-year deal with Top Rank, one of the world’s leading boxing promoters, under which some fighters in his stable will have their bouts shown in USA and Canada by ESPN, the cable sports broadcaster.
The exclusive licensing agreement will begin on 6 October, with the card from Leicester, England, which includes Daniel Dubois, one of the best heavyweight prospects in the world, and Nicola Adams, Great Britain's two-time Olympic gold medallist.
The exposure on ESPN comes off the back of a new seven-year deal the broadcaster signed last month with Top Rank, under which ESPN will provide live coverage of 54 events per year, of which 18 will be shown live on ESPN linear channels, 12 will be exclusive prime-time events on ESPN+, the new over-the-top service, and 24 will be premium international events on ESPN+.
ESPN+ will provide undercard coverage of all 54 fight nights.
Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank, said: “We are committed to securing the biggest and best events from around the world. Our long-term objective is to showcase global talent and to expose the next generation of boxing stars. Frank Warren is a legend with a keen eye for building talent, and his elite stable has proven to resonate with North American fans.”
Warren added: “I am absolutely delighted and honoured to announce this landmark multi-year deal with Top Rank that will see my Promotions going forward feature regularly on the ESPN platforms in the US and Canada. This was a very attractive opportunity to us due to the level of exposure our stable of fighters will benefit from by being showcased by one of, if not, the biggest broadcaster in sport.
“The level of exposure, consistency of events being shown and our long and valued relationship with Top Rank will ensure this deal will be a huge success for all involved. US boxing fans tuning in on ESPN can look forward to seeing competitive match-ups featuring some of the UK’s finest boxing talent on a regular basis.”
Warren’s portfolio of boxers includes Tyson Fury, Billy Joe Saunders, Carl Frampton, Terry Flanagan, Zolani Tete, Liam Smith, Lee Selby and Josh Warrington.
His boxers' fights in the UK are shown by both BT Sport and BoxNation.
In May, Warren's great UK rival, Eddie Hearn and his Matchroom Sport announced a major tie-up in the US market with DAZN, the Perform-owned over-the-top subscription service.
Through the Matchroom Boxing USA joint-venture, 16 major fight nights will be staged per year featuring top boxers at venues across USA.
DAZN is the exclusive home in USA of the shows, starting this month, as well as Matchroom’s 16 fight nights in the UK, in an eight-year deal, worth as much as $1 billion.
