Mediapro to provide VAR services at Copa Libertadores climax
Conmebol, the South American soccer confederation, has selected an arm of Mediapro, the Spanish sports agency and production company, to provide the video assistant referee services for the climax of this year’s Copa Libertadores, the continent’s top clubs competition.
Prom TV SA will be on-site for the two legs of both semi-finals and the final in October and November.
The company was chosen from a shortlist of five that also included Chile Films SpA, Hawk-Eye Innovations Limited, Prime Telecom Ltda (Broadcast Solutions) and Rufina SA (Sun Colosseo).
Conmebol, which launched the tender process in July, said that Prom TV SA was “a group that specialises in audiovisual production for sporting events” and “has extensive experience,” while citing its recent appointment as the official provider of VAR technology for the FPF, the Portuguese soccer federation, in a five-year deal.
Mediapro has been approved by Fifa as a provider of VAR services for national and international competitions.
It will be the first time that the technology, which is intended to improve the decision-making process of match officials in the sport, features in the Copa Libertadores although tests were conducted at the Copa América Centenario, jointly organised by Conmebol and Concacaf, in USA last year.
The two legs of the Copa Libertadores final are due to take place on 22 and 29 November.
