WADA to Hold World Conference on Anti-Doping in Sport
MONTREAL, Canada (7 August 2002) – The World Conference on Anti-Doping in Sport, a gathering aimed at harmonizing the global rules and sanctions related to doping, will be held March 3-5, 2003, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said today. As previously announced, the conference will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Representatives of national governments, related public authorities, the Olympic Movement, other sports governing bodies, athletes and expert groups will be invited to attend the conference to discuss, review and agree in principle on the new World Anti-Doping Code in time for its application during the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games.
This conference will be the second of its kind after the meeting organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in February 1999 in Lausanne, Switzerland. The first World Conference resulted in the Lausanne Declaration, the document that led to the creation of WADA.
WADA seeks to foster a doping free culture in sport. Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, it combines the resources of sport and government to educate athletes about the harmful effects of doping, reinforce the idea of fair play, and sanction those who cheat themselves and their sport.
