Two IRB Rugby Sevens Tournaments Cancelled

Rugby union - 13 Feb 2003

As a result of the late withdrawal of the sponsor, Cristal Beer, the IRB Sevens in Chile has been cancelled. The tournament was originally due to take place in January, but was rescheduled for 7/8th March because of logistical problems.

In addition, due to an unresolved financial dispute between the Malaysian Union and the local Event Management Company, the IRB has cancelled the Malaysian event.

Mark Egan, IRB Sevens Manager, said: 'Local commercial difficulties have resulted in the cancellation of these two tournaments. However, the first four tournaments have been hugely successful which bodes well not only for this season but for the future.'

The IRB Sevens will now be staged over nine tournaments with the remaining five tournaments taking place as scheduled. The next stop is Hong Kong on 28/29/30th March with the Final tournament in Twickenham on 6/7th June.
