Terry Young qualifies for Euro Champs Men's Singles rounds
21 year old Terry Young from Maidenhead, Berkshire has reached the first round proper of the European Championships men's singles being played in Bremen, Germany, joining Matthew Syed (Surrey) and Alex Perry (Devon). Just managing to control his emotions, Young came back from first game deficits to power his way through Audrius Kacerauskas (Lithuania) 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 and Uros Slatincek (Slovenia) 16-21, 21-17, 21-11 in the qualifying rounds. However, 17 year old Andrew Baggaley from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, who had earlier won his two team event singles to help England men defeat Belgium 4-3 and secure 11th place (out of 46), was unfortunate to be squeezed out 21-15, 17-21, 23-21 by Austria's Christopher Maier in his qualifying round. In the women's singles qualifying competition, 15 year old Katy Parker (Preston, Lancashire), faded from 10-2 up in the deciding game to go down 21-6, 14-21, 18-21 to Vilma Daunoraviciute (Lithunaia), lack of experience and difficulty in returning service being the factors counting against her. England had also come 11th in the team event. England's Alex Perry (Devon) and Carl Prean (Isle of Wight), have a last chance to qualify for the Sydney Olympics in the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament at Seville, Spain on 25-28th May. Perry will be captained by England head coach Soren Ahlen, but England are exceptionally allowing Prean, who currently declines to play for England, to be captained by Kevin Satchell (Wiltshire), who has recently been coaching the Scottish team. England players dominated the Home Countries Junior and Cadet Internationals at Largs, winning the junior and cadet girls, and cadet boys team event, and coming runners-up to Scotland in the junior boys. Hannah Yardy (Brentwood, Essex) won the junior girls singles, Peter Cleminson (also Brentwood, Essex) won the junior boys, and Joanna Parker (Chertsey, Surrey) won the cadet (under 14) girls. Connor Nolan (Ireland) took the cadet boys singles. For further information contact Ken Muhr, ETTA Information Officer, Tel. 01424 722525 Fax. 01424 422103.
