Spectacular Celebrations in Support of Qatar's 2022 Bid at the MES Indian School

Soccer - 18 May 2010

10,000 students from the MES Indian School staged a magnificent event yesterday on their school grounds, in support of Qatar’s 2022 bid to host the FIFA World Cup. The red carpet was rolled out for guests of the event, who were treated to an array of cultural songs and dances, artistic displays and sports shows.

V.I.P. guests were treated to a traditional welcoming ceremony that included a band. The guests were guided to their stage seats and left to watch the events unfold that had encompassed two months of intense preparation. Students carried five large shirts around the school football pitch with messages of support for Qatar’s 2022 bid written on every inch of the material and wowed visitors with choreographed cultural dances. The students also composed and performed a special song in celebration of Qatar’s World Cup bid.

Qatar 2022 Communications Director, Nasser Al Khater, said that he was left ‘speechless’ after the incredible show laid on by the students. Al Khater went on to thank the MES Indian School, President of the school’s governing body, Mr. M.K. Abdul Rahman and Principal A.P. Sasidharan for the preparation, welcome and the celebrations that were held in support of Qatar’s bid.

M.R. Qureshi, Second Secretary, attended on behalf of the Indian Embassy in Doha. In addition to Communications Director, Nasser Al Khater, Sheikh Sultan A. Al Thani, Director of International Relations and Khalid Al Kubaisi, Director of Finance and Administration attended the event as representatives of the Qatar 2022.

Commenting on the local support for the bid, Al Khater added, ‘the passion and excitement created today by this fantastic show at the MES Indian School is truly amazing. Local communities in Qatar, local and foreign, form the foundation of our bid to bring the World Cup here in 2022.

Qatar 2022’s community outreach campaign will continue over the coming week with visits to different schools across Qatar. On Thursday Doha College will be the venue for the latest local pledges of support for the bid. The campaign aims to bring together the diverse local communities in Qatar though a shared love of football and in support of Qatar 2022.
