Bank of Beijing sponsors major Wakeboard World Cup Stop at the city's Shunyi Olympic Rowing & Canoeing Park this coming weekend

Waterskiing - 22 Jul 2014

Bank of Beijing, one of China’s largest city commercial banks, hit the headlines recently when it hired Goldman Morgan Stanley for a Hong Kong IPO scheduled for 2015. Its largest shareholder is the Netherlands ING Bank NV based in Amsterdam.

The Bank’s support of this World Cup Stop of the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) comes at a historic time. Not only is this the 40th Stop of this successful IWWF series but it is also an international Cable Wakeboard event based at the site of the 2008 Olympic Rowing and Canoeing lake at Mapo Village on the outskirts of Beijing. With 10km of open water at this unique man-made facility, the Shunyi Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Park is the world's largest.

The Bank’s involvement in Cable Wakeboard reflects the enormous global growth of this low cost and environment friendly sport. Similar to Snowboard, the focus on young participants gives access to this vital sector for marketers worldwide. With Cable Parks now opening almost daily from Egypt to Morocco, Ireland to Australia, USA to South Africa and Germany to Brazil, the International Olympic Committee has also shown keen interest. The IWWF made presentations to the IOC recently in both Lausanne and St Petersburg with a special focus on the 2020 Olympic Games and beyond. Snowboard’s success in capturing enormous TV audiences for the Winter Games makes Wakeboard a serious contender for the Summer Games. Bank of Beijing will now share in some of this success in a youth focused sporting context.

The top international Wakeboarders heading to Shunyi Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Park this weekend, in temperatures of 33C / 92Fh, will include the highest ranked athletes from 19 countries. Organised by the Chinese Water Ski Association and sanctioned by IWWF Asia, the timetable is as follows :
