Reilly makes Academy Inter County Debut
Newly-appointed National Academy coach Malcolm Reilly has his first chance to see the best of British Under 18 talent when he takes in the opening Academy Inter-County Championship 2000 fixture between Lancashire and Cumbria at The Willows, Salford on Sunday, May 14 (Kick off 17.00hrs). The game will be staged as the curtain raiser to the Tetley Bitter Super League match between Salford City Reds and Warrington Wolves and it will be featured as SkySports Television's Academy game on the Wednesday the following week. Reilly, who was appointed as the National Academy Coach two weeks ago, will be at the match starting his Academy Lions selection procedure and, at the same time, he will be watching the performances of both team managements. The former Great Britain coach has yet to select an assistant so both Lancashire's Paul Darbyshire and Cumbria's Stuart Wilkinson will also be under the Reilly spotlight at Salford. It will be Yorkshire coach Graham Steadman's turn when the White Rose team goes into action. "The provision of representative Rugby League is a crucial element in the development of Academy players and the Inter County challenge is the first taste many of our Under 18 players will have had of this part of our sport," said National Player Development Director Nick Halafihi. "Also it will be a new experience for some of the players to experience the pressure of the selection process. If we are to compete with our Southern Hemisphere rivals it is essential that we expose these young players to as many different experiences of professional sport as possible."
