Polish TV Goes for Gold at the Spar European Cup

Athletics - 08 Jun 2004

Polish Television will take its live athletics coverage to new heights when it broadcasts the Spar European Cup from Bydgoszcz's Zawisza stadium on June 19 and 20. This will be the first outdoor event of the new EBU-EAA contract for 2004 to 2007, which will cover 13 events.

'We will use 40 cameras and six outside broadcast vans for the production of six feeds, five international plus one national,' says Stanislaw Snopek of TVP (Telewizja Polska), the host broadcaster. 'We will be able to cover and record every single jump and throw, so we will not miss any important performances.'

TVP faces a particular challenge with the Cup, Europe’s premier team athletics event, as several disciplines often run simultaneously. The EAA and TVP will try to improve the event’s broadcast presentation following the many suggestions that emerged from the recent IAAF TV seminar in Athens. They plan to show most field events live and reduce the amount of dead air time.

The top league of 25th edition of the competition, which takes place in Poland for the first time since the event was inaugurated as the Bruno Zauli Cup in 1965, is of particular significance because it is the only major EAA or IAAF event before the Athens Olympic Games in August and will act as a selection test for many teams.

Athletics is growing in importance to TVP. Last year's coverage of the 2003 World Championships in Paris was seen by 45 million Poles; only France, Germany and the United Kingdom achieved higher viewing figures. During the World Indoor Championships in Budapest in March 2004 TVP's audience reached a high point of 4,015,000 (33.9 per cent share). The European Indoor Cup in Leipzig in February attracted a high of 3,920,000 viewers (36 per cent share).

Interest in the event at home will be high as the country anticipates a strong performance from both its men's and women's teams. Poland, which has made 16 appearances in the competition, hopes to repeat its men's team's victory in Bremen in 2001.

Next year's edition of the Spar European Cup will take place either in Stockholm or Florence; the 2006 edition has been awarded to Malaga.
