New Partnership Signals Movement and Dance Modernisation

Business - 21 Jul 2006

Sport England backs new movement and dance partnership as the sector modernises.

Sport England has welcomed the creation of the Exercise, Movement and Dance Partnership, which forms part of the ongoing modernisation programme for the movement and dance sector.

The new partnership (EMDP) brings together the Keep Fit Association, The Fitness League and the Medau Society. The unification will enable them to work more closely together towards increased participation at all levels.

Sport England has agreed to invest £150,000 per annum for three years into the EMDP (2006-09). This follows the three national governing bodies last year submitting their joint business plan called “Get Moving: A million movers in 25 years.”

The Exercise, Movement and Dance Partnership aims to be a nationally recognised voice of the movement and dance sector, and to increase the number of qualified teachers in the sector as well as those getting active.

The partnership has recently appointed Daran Bennett as its Chief Executive, who has vast experience in the leisure and sports sector. A board of Directors is also now in place - Margaret Peggie, from the Fitness League, has been appointed as the EMDP’s Board Chair.

Stephen Baddeley, interim Chief Executive of Sport England said: “I am delighted that three of the leading governing bodies in the sector have decided to come together to form the new Exercise Movement and Dance Partnership. This is a positive step forward in terms of modernisation and joined-up thinking, and will help boost participation in sport. The movement and dance sector encompasses a wide variety of activities which attract and cater for a wide range of people and offers a truly inclusive approach to participation in sport and active recreation.”

Chief Executive of EMDP, Daran Bennett, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the Keep Fit Association, Fitness League and Medau Society to create a national network, pool their resources and share best practise in the drive to achieve their joint plan and get a million movers in 25 years. The Partnership, although in its embryonic stage, will mean a less fragmented sector at a wider level that can only be a good thing, and our work is now focussed on building an infrastructure that will enable increased participation, being recognised as a supportive body for movement and dance and to welcome others on board.”
