New Basketball Tournament Attracts Top Talent

Basketball - 27 May 1999

The University of Kentucky in Lexington is set to host the inaugural Nike Bluegrass Classic on May 29-31. Nike and tournament organizer Eddie Ford unveiled the event which boasts top teams from 22 different states. At the time of going to press, the tournament had attracted 40 Senior Division (17-and-under) and 24 Junior Division (16-and-under) first class teams.

Nike high school programs director Lynn Merritt said of the event, 'We are extremely excited to enter into this new partnership with the Bluegrass Classic and to be able to provide these student-athletes with another avenue to realize their dreams both on and off the court. Once again we are able to bring today's young leaders together for a fun week of learning, interaction and competitive basketball.'

In addition to the three day tournament, Nike and student counselor Frank Dubois will host an intensive Life Skills Training Seminar for all 64 teams. The Seminar is aimed at providing student-athletes with the skills to compete at the highest levels both in the classroom and on the court.
