MLB Signs Wireless Distribution Agreement in China and Taiwan

Baseball - 09 Sep 2004

MLB Advanced Media, LP (MLBAM), the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, announced today its first-ever wireless distribution initiative in the territories of China and Taiwan.

MLBAM has entered into a non-exclusive licensing agreement with ELTA, a major mobile content provider in Taiwan. Under the terms of the agreement, MLBAM will provide ELTA with the 30 Major League Baseball Club logos allowing ELTA customers the opportunity to download the logos as wallpaper to their mobile phones. ELTA will create, in conjunction with MLBAM, a co-branded web page in the Chinese language on ELTA's existing website: http://www.hitoclub.com. The agreement runs through the end of the 2005 season.

'Baseball has always been a national sport in our country,' said Sally Chen, CEO of ELTA. 'With Taiwanese players starting to make their way onto Major League Baseball teams, this new promotional content should prove very popular in Taiwan. We are very excited about this new partnership and are confident that as more content and new services become available, Major League Baseball will have a stronger presence in Asia.'

'Taiwan is the only country in the world with over a 100% mobile adoption rate. New mobile services are booming every day, and branded content such as MLB will do well in establishing a strong relationship with the subscribers.' says ELTA's VP Peter Cheng, 'The fifteen to eighteen year old consumer downloads an average of 2.3 wallpapers per month, and there are over 1 million of these teenagers with advanced handsets, just the branding effect of MLB will open a whole new door of opportunities for sports fans'.

'We are very excited about MLBAM's first-ever wireless distribution initiative in this part of the world,' said George Kliavkoff, senior vice president of business development for MLBAM. 'An important part of our charter is to expand and promote the game around the globe and this partnership will help provide exposure for Major League Baseball to millions of fans.'
