Local Support for Sochi 2014 Produces Over 20,000 Votes At Weekend Festival
The city came alive as residents of all ages took part in the “Olympic” festivities, including sport tournaments, relay-races, and roller and table hockey championships. The Festival’s slogan “Come back!” (Vozvrashaysya!) was a reference to Moscow’s hosting the Olympic Games in 1980 and Russia’s new prospect to once again welcome the Olympic Family in 2014.
The weekend festival highlighted the Sochi 2014 commitment to the Paralympic Movement, featuring competitions for athletes with disabilities as part of the day-long program. Former Olympic champions and medalists also participated in the event, demonstrating the wide support for Sochi’s Bid leading up to the International Olympic Committee’s decision of a host city in July 2007.
Dmitry Chernyshenko, Sochi 2014 Bid CEO, commented on the local support at the festival:
“Already 89% of Sochi residents are behind our Bid to host the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and I hope that this number continues to grow. Hosting the Games in our city would leave a lasting legacy for our youth and the future of winter sports in our nation.”
The event culminated with a live performance of the Russian rock group “Zveri”.
