Athens 2004 Briefs Salt Lake on its Olympic Preparations
'The Athens Olympic preparations are proceeding well, but time is tight and we can not afford to loose a day', stressed ATHENS 2004 President, Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki during her address to the IOC General Assembly in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The 113th International Olympic Committee Session met before the SLC Winter Olympic Games begin on Friday.
IOC members were briefed in detail on the status of preparations and were told specifically of:
*Progress on construction works at competition venues and the Olympic Village. The Olympic Village, one of the most complex projects related to the Games, is ahead of schedule.
*Progress on transport infrastructure, highlighting the rail network (Athens Metro, Electric Railways and suburban rail), which will have a capacity of over a million passengers daily by Games-time.
*Progress on the sports competition schedule, the test event calendar, International Federation relations, venue operations, management and budgeting systems, accommodation and communications.
*The success of the national sponsorship programme. There was reference to the achievements of the Greek private sector: 107% of the total sponsoring budget and 150% of the licensing budget are already in hand, totalling US$264 million in revenues for ATHENS 2004.
*The security plans for 2004: US$600 million has been committed for security, 37 agreements were signed on security issues and an ongoing international cooperation, including work with Interpol, is taking place.
The IOC members attending the 113th IOC Plenary Session were also told of the observation and cooperation programme ATHENS 2004 set in place in Salt Lake.
Closing her address, Mrs Angelopoulos said:
'We are here to listen and to learn. We would like to wish the very best to all organisers of the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games'.
ATHENS 2004 President also met with Utah Governor, Mike Leavitt.
