IRB Backs Concussion Symposium
The International Rugby Board (IRB) is to support the second international symposium on concussion in sport, which is being held in Prague's Grand Hilton Hotel on 5 and 6 November 2004. The IRB will also attend the symposium as a premier sponsor.
The first symposium was held in November 2001 in Vienna and highlighted the research that had been carried out at that time on concussions in sport.
This second symposium will consider the very latest research on head injuries, with an emphasis firstly on rehabilitation, recovery and return to play and secondly on guidelines to establish an effective concussion management program.
Each issue will be accompanied by a comprehensive review of progress made since the initial symposium by leading medical experts in head trauma from around the world.
IRB Medical Advisory Committee member and accident and emergency specialist Roger Evans (WAL) will speak at the event, which will also be attended by committee member Dr Barry O'Driscoll (IRE).
'Concussion occurs in many sports, and with new medical research constantly being undertaken it is important to have a forum for open discussion on the topic,' said IRB Chairman Dr Syd Millar, also Chairman of the IRB Medical Advisory Committee.
