International Sports Leaders Gather in Russia
This morning Mr. Rogge attended an official meeting of the Russian sports community to celebrate the 60th birthday of the President of the Russian Olympic Committee Leonid Tyagachev. The audience consisted of many Olympic champions, Russian IOC members (Vitaly Smirnov, Alexander Popov, Shamil Tarpischev), a number of international IOC members and Sport Federations representatives including Sir Phillip Craven (IOC member, President of the International Paralympic Committee), Ottavio Cinquanta (IOC member, President of the International Skating Union), Rene Fasel (IOC member, President of the International Ice Hockey Federation), Gian-Franco Casper (IOC member, President of the International Ski Federation), Irene Szewinska (IOC member), Patrick Joseph Hickey (IOC member, President of the European Olympic Committees), Andreas Besseberg (President of the International Biathlon Union), and leaders of National Olympic Committees of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan. At the event Mr. Rogge awarded Mr. Tyagachev with the Olympic order.
Later today the IOC President is scheduled to meet with Boris Gryzlov, speaker of the State Duma (Russian Parliament).
Mr. Rogge’s agenda yesterday included visits to various sport facilities and a meeting with President Vladimir Putin to discuss the development of sport in Russia, and the role it can play, especially as regards teaching young people the values of respect, friendship and striving for excellence. Collaboration between the worlds of sport and government is an especially important topic in such domains as the fight against doping on an international level.
