Iker Casillas joins the Madrid 2020 cause as volunteers number 60,000
Buenos Aires, August 1, 2013 - “I’m Iker Casillas, the captain of Real Madrid and the Spanish national football team, and I’m a Madrid 2020 volunteer. It’s an honour to be Madrid 2020’s 60,000th volunteer.”
In signing up as volunteer number 60,000, Iker Casillas is sharing his Olympic dream with thousands of members of the public, all of whom are hoping to see Madrid win the day on 7 September. The Spanish capital’s Olympic dream is breaking records every day as more and more people apply to become volunteers, among them sporting and showbiz celebrities such as Vicente del Bosque or Alejandro Sanz.
Speaking from Rio de Janeiro, where he is attending the final day of the World Judo Championships along with many members of the International Olympic Committee, Madrid 2020 Bid President Alejandro Blanco said it was very important that Casillas had come on board: “He is a great sportsman and is regarded as the finest goalkeeper in the world. All I can say is how grateful I am to him. He knows how much I admire him as a player and as a person, and I wish him the very best. It means an awful lot that he is our 60,000th volunteer.”
Entitled “Necesitamos tu manera de querer. Hazte voluntario” (“We Need Your Way of Loving: Be a Volunteer”), the volunteer recruitment campaign was launched 11 months ago. The scale of support registered since then has exceeded all expectations and reveals just how much the people of Madrid and the bid itself want to see the Games on their own doorstep.
“We’re organised and we’ve got the athletes with us, but the most important people of all are the volunteers,” added Blanco, who said volunteering was a way of helping the country. “They’re our people and they’re the ones who have the job of making everyone happy. If you ask me, nobody can beat the Spanish volunteers.”
