HRH Prince Felipe of Asturias joins Madrid 2020 delegation in Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires, September 2, 2013 - HRH Prince Felipe of Asturias arrived in Buenos Aires today, ready to lead the final campaign push as Madrid bids to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020.
HRH, who was an athlete and flag bearer for the Spanish team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games joins the delegation, which includes Alejandro Blanco and Mayor Ana Botella.
“The Prince is the leader of the bid,” said Madrid 2020 Bid and Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) President Alejandro Blanco. “He was Spain’s flag bearer at Barcelona 1992 and now he is carrying the flag for the Spain of the future. He has been a sportsman and an Olympic diploma winner and he is knowledgeable and dedicated. He is without question the shining light that will guide the Madrid 2020 Bid and help it stand out from the rest. Words cannot express what the Prince has done for the bid and for Spain. In our opinion it is a very great honour that he wishes to share these unforgettable moments with us as just another member of our bid team.”
The heir to the Spanish throne, Prince Felipe emphasised the fact that Madrid 2020 has a “magnificent opportunity” to secure victory, adding that its chances of success represented an opportunity for the Olympic movement as a whole, as it would open the way for more realistic and sustainable projects.
