From Russia to Glasgow: The logistics of transporting sports equipment from the 2014 games in Sochi

Next stop on the world tour is the 2014 Commonwealth Games

 Frankfurt/Sochi/Glasgow, May 8, 2014 – The 2014 Winter Games in Sochi may already feel like a lifetime ago to the sporting world but the logistics of the removal process is far from over. 250 metric tons of sports and team equipment were transported to Sochi by the German project logistics company Conceptum Sport Logistics (CSL – www.conceptum-sport-logistics.com) alone, and the experts at CSL are currently sending some of that equipment on a new journey to Glasgow, where the Commonwealth Games (www.thecgf.com) are set to take place in just a few weeks. In Scotland from July 23, 6,500 athletes from 70 nations will compete and battle for victory in 17 different types of sport.
 
On top of transporting sports equipment from Sochi, the Frankfurt-based company is shipping sports goods from numerous other countries to Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city. Various sports teams, such as the National Olympic Committees, have chosen to place their trust in CSL’s "Made in Germany" logistics services. "The Games in Russia were an enormous challenge for our team and kept us on our toes for months. But with a vast amount of freight already making its way to Scotland by air and sea as we speak, we haven’t had any time to catch our breath," states Sebastian Stahl, managing director of Conceptum Sport Logistics. CSL has also been given the task of transporting the time keeping devices from Switzerland to Glasgow. This is no mean feat, as alongside the athletes’ kit, they are the most sensitive pieces of equipment needed at the event. 
 
The Commonwealth Games are an international sporting event with a rich history dating back to 1911, when the first competition took place. Every four years, the best athletes from across the countries in the Commonwealth of Nations gather to compete in a variety of sports. The idea first took root in 1891, when the Englishman J. Astley Cooper wrote a newspaper article proposing a festival featuring sport, the military and literature, with the aim of bringing together the members of the British Empire in games that were to be more friendly than competitive. 
 
The inaugural British Empire Games were hosted by Canada in 1930 and since this date the Games have been held as a purely sporting event. In addition to Olympic disciplines, the program also includes sports that are only widely played in the countries of the Commonwealth, such as badminton, squash, cricket, hockey and lawn bowls.
