FIVB Executive Committee Expels Mario Goijman
The Executive Committee of the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) on Thursday decided to expel former president of the Argentine Volleyball Federation, Mario Goijman for repeated and serious breaches of the FIVB Constitution and Code of Conduct, and for violations of the organizations agreement of the 2002 Men’s World Championship hosted in October 2002 in Argentina.
'We have always, and will continue to act in the best interests of Volleyball and we must be relentless in dealing with such breaches of our Code of Conduct and our ethics with swiftness and absolute thoroughness,' said Mr. Jizhong Wei, 1st Vice President of the Executive Committee. Mr. Wei chaired the meeting in the absence of FIVB President, Dr. Ruben Acosta, who is convalescing after a brief illness.
The Executive Committee, during the course of the meeting, reaffirmed that the FIVB had acted with absolute correctness concerning the payment of commission for FIVB members with regards to television and other marketing contracts.
'We continue, as always, to act with transparency and correctness according to the FIVB Constitution and our Code of Conduct. All our income and expenditure is completely official and transparent, ' said FIVB General Manager, Mr. Jean-Pierre Seppey.
The former president had been suspended from all volleyball activities at national, continental and international level on November 7, 2002. He then instituted court proceedings in Switzerland to have his suspension reversed.
On Friday, February 7, 2003, the Civil Court of the Canton of Vaud upheld the FIVB’s suspension of Goijman, ordering him to pay CHF 4,650 in costs to the FIVB.
Goijman was obliged, on February 20, 2003 in Lausanne, before the FIVB Executive Committee, to openly respond to charges that he violated the FIVB Constitution (Statutes), Regulations and Code of Conduct, specifically related to vitriolic open attacks to the dignity of FIVB, and to answer charges that he had violated the terms of the Contract of Cooperation between FIVB and FAV, the Organizing Committee for the 2002 World Championship After the Hearing, the FIVB Executive Committee decided unanimously on the expulsion of Goijman from all Volleyball activities (national, continental and international).
According to the FIVB constitution, Goijman has the right to appeal to the Board of Administration within 30 days. The Board of Administration meets in Lausanne on March 31, 2003.
