After Success at SportAccord Sochi 2014 Focus Shifts to IIHF World Championship

Beijing, China, April 27, 2007 – Following Sochi 2014's passionate presentation at SportAccord 2007 in Beijing, the Olympic Bid Team is returning home to focus its attention on the start of the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. Playing host to top athletes and supporters from around the world, Russia celebrates the close of the Winter Sports season.

Sochi 2014 took a high-level delegation to SportAccord 2007 to present to the Olympic Family and international media; the delegation included Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Zhukov, Russia’s Sports Minister and ice hockey legend, Vyacheslav Fetisov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Leonid Tyagachev, Bid CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko and Russian IOC members Alexander Popov and Vitaly Smirnov

Sochi 2014 made a splash in Beijing at with a cutting-edge high-tech stand and ice masterclass that brought together skating legend and local favourite, Lu Chen, her Russian husband, Olympic silver medalist Denis Petrov, and reigning speed skating Olympic Champion Svetlana Zhurova. The skating stars took to the ice with local young Olympic hopefuls, sharing tips and experiences with them. The trio was also joined by four-time Olympic Champion gymnast Alexei Nemov in a show of support for Sochi 2014.

Sochi 2014 Bid CEO, Dmitry Chernyshenko, said:

“SportAccord 2007 has been an insightful and highly enjoyable experience for the Sochi 2014 Bid Team. Being in Beijing has again reaffirmed the extent to which hosting an Olympiad can energize an entire nation, and we were pleased to have the opportunity to present our vision of Winter Games to the Olympic Family and international press. We are also excited by the start of the 2007 IIHF World Championship and join the organizers in welcoming 15 visiting nations to Russia.”

Die-hard hockey fans from all over the world are expected to attend the IIHF event and celebrate Russia’s passion for winter sport. The elite competition will see 16 nations battle for the Championship in Moscow and Mytischi starting on April 27 and will once again showcase Russia’s great expertise in hosting prestigious sports events.

Vyacheslav Tretyak, legendary goaltender and the President of the Russian Hockey Federation, said:

“The Russian nation is gripped by excitement about hosting the IIHF World Championship,as we are passionate about winter sport and about hosting fantastic sporting events. The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014 would be the ultimate expression of this commitment and I urge winter sports fans around the world to support our Bid to host Russia’s first ever Winter Games in Sochi.”
