Council of Europe and UEFA to Host Conference in Strasbourg – 'Play Fair with Sport'
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and UEFA are to co-host a one-day conference in Strasbourg, on Friday 29 September, focusing on sport and politics in Europe.
In addition to the opening and closing sessions, there will be three main areas to the conference: building better relations between politics and sport, highlighting examples of best practice and good governance in sport, and recommendations for the future of European cooperation in the field of sport.
The conference is taking place in the context of several initiatives to improve the framework for sport in Europe. These include the recently published Independent European Sport Review, proposed changes in the Council of Europe, the European Commission White Paper on sport, and the European Parliament report on professional football.
Key note speakers scheduled to speak at the conference include; René van der Linden, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe; Matthieu Sprengers and Lars-Christer Olsson, Treasurer and CEO of UEFA respectively; Viatcheslav Fetisov, Chairman of the Federal Sports Agency of the Russian Federation; Tanja Saarela, Minister of Culture, Finland; and José Luís Arnaut, Chairman of the Independent European Sport Review.
The conference begins at 09:00 and finishes at 16:30, and will be held in the Assembly debating chamber. A press conference will follow.
