Channel 5 to Show Argentine League
A deal between leading sports rights distributor Fox Sports International and English terrestrial broadcaster Channel 5 is bringing the Argentine Football League to British screens for the first time. Channel 5 has previously shown some AFL Summer Tournament matches, but this is the first time that the main league season is featured. The two year deal (00/01 & 01/02 seasons) adds the Argentine 'Game of the Week' (ClĂ sico del Domingo) to Channel 5's Thursday Night Football schedule.
The AFL has long been regarded as one of the most skilful leagues in the world, and boasts some of the most keenly fought rivalries including Boca Juniors, River Plate and Independiente. The AFL has been responsible for many of the world's premier players, with the likes of Diego Maradona, Gabriel Batistuta and Claudio Caniggia and Arsenal's Nelson Vivas having all played in the league before moving to Europe to further their careers. Current stars of the AFL include Claudio Lopez and Diego Simeone.
The league consists of the twenty AFL teams contesting two tournaments per year. The season opener, Apertura, and the finale to the season, the Clausura.
