World Waterski Racing Championships 2015 are heading for New Zealand's capital city of Wellington
Temperatures of 17C / 63F are anticipated in what will be mid Autumn in this region.
The World’s best Waterski Racers will compete for 6 titles. These will include Men’s Formula 1 and 2, Women’s Formula 1 and 2 and Junior (Under 17) Boys and Girls. It is expected that teams and their boats will take on the challenge from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, France, Spain and USA. Reaching speeds in excess of 160kph on the Wellington Harbor courses, this spectacular event is expected to attract huge crowds of spectators to the areas of Oriental Bay and Evan’s Bay.
The teams will compete in four rounds over the course of a week, with a day-on, day-off, schedule. The competitors’ three best results will count towards the world titles awards. The Junior Skiers will compete for 30 minutes plus one lap, the Women for 45 minutes and the Men for 60 minutes respectively.
The last Waterski Racing World Championships were held in Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands in September 2013. They were totally dominated by Australia in both the Team and Individual events. Wayne Mawer (AUS) and Trudy Stout (AUS) took the Open Gold Medals, Ben Gulley (AUS) and the late Sarah Teelow (AUS) took the F2 Gold Medals, and the Junior Gold Medals went to Jack Harrison (AUS) and Rachel Stapleton (AUS). New Zealand’s Skiers captured a Silver Medal and 5th place with Mitchell Horan and Natalia Flexman. They both competed in the Junior categories. Both Horan and Flexman hope to be selected once again to show their high-speed skills in front of the home nation supporters in Wellington next April. New Zealand is also expected to have a significantly larger team this time around in an effort to break the dominance of Australia as seen in 2013.
