World University Karate Championship Begins This Week

Belgrade is the meeting point of hundreds of young people from different countries to participate in the 4th World University Karate Championship from 9 to 14 July 2004.

The World University Karate Championship intends to promote sporting value and encourage sporting practice in harmony with university spirit.

This event takes place every 2 years with the support of FISU (International University Sports Federation) and WKF (World Karate Federation).

Taking into consideration the attendance of 34 countries and 347 athletes, the event is established as an important Karate Championship.

The games will be held in the 'Pioneer Sports Hall' which belongs to TASHMAIDAN, the largest sports center in the Serbia and Montenegro.

The 4th World University Karate Championship starts on July 8th with the opening ceremony and with the team 'Kata and Kumite' and finishes with individual 'Kumite' on July 11th.

During this event, the Committee for the Development of woman’s Karate along with the Karate Association of Serbia & Montenegro will organize a seminar on the Position and Presence of Women in Karate Worldwide. The seminar will take place on the July 8th, 2004 in Belgrade.

The WKF will be represented by its General Secretary, Dr. George Yerolimpos.

I want to give the warmest welcome to all participants in this 4th World University Karate Championship in Belgrade.

The active incorporation of the University to the sport of karate that has taken place in the last two decades worldwide and that continues increasingly, supposes today one of the most important social assets of our sport and of the World Karate Federation.

Therefore, WKF welcomes this initiative, encourage the Federation of Serbia and Montenegro as organizers to do its most for having a brilliant event and thanks once again the university community for being every time a more important part of our sport.

In the name of the Organizing Committee and in my own name I have the pleasure to welcome all athletes to the 4th World University Karate Championship – Belgrade 2004.
I hope, while being in Belgrade and between their sports duties, they will find the pleasure in making friends and to enjoy in Belgrade, that is the center of life- economy, university, cultural and sports activities.
I wish to all athletes a very pleasant time in our country as well as achieving high sports results.
With hope that the athletes stay and results will help in enriching the spirit of university students, friendship and tolerance, I wish good luck to all.
