Turkey steps in for Canada in 2021 F1 season
Motor racing’s Formula 1 has announced a change to the 2021 calendar with the Turkish Grand Prix to replace the cancelled round in Canada.
The event in Istanbul will serve as round seven of the championship, on 11 to 13 June.
The Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal was called off after new travel restrictions in Canada brought about by the coronavirus pandemic made it compulsory to complete a 14-day quarantine.
It is the second successive year that the race has been cancelled due to Covid-19.
Stefano Domenicali, president and chief executive of Formula 1, said: “I know all our fans are excited by the dramatic start to the season and Turkey is a great circuit that delivers great battles on the track.”
Turkey has been added to the Formula 1 calendar for a second consecutive year having been absent since 2011.
The 2021 season began in Bahrain last month and is set to comprise 23 rounds, ending in Abu Dhabi in December.
A statement from Formula 1 read: “We are grateful for the efforts of the promoter and the authorities in Canada, Quebec and Montreal in the past few weeks to try and make the race happen and we are pleased to announce a two-year extension to our partnership with the Canadian Grand Prix.”
