Basque derby Twitch trial nets over 500,000 views
The match, which finished 1-1, was streamed on the Twitch channels of Gol, the free-to-air channel of the Mediapro agency, LaLiga and Ibai Llanos, the Spanish internet celebrity, streamer and esports commentator, and collectively drew over 500,000 views and 15,000 interactions via chat.
The game kicked off at 9pm (CET) but the Twitch stream began 30 minutes earlier for a pre-match show, with fans able to engage with casters and participate in the broadcast via the streaming chat.
The derby was also shown on the Gol TV channel, and drew an average audience of 832,000 and a peak of 1.1 million towards the end of the game, with both goals scored inside the last 10 minutes.
An audience share of 4.9 per cent was a record for Gol in 2021.
Mediapro and LaLiga said the Twitch initiative was part of their "commitment to content creation in digital environments, affording soccer fans in Spain an innovative experience, new channels for participation, and entertainment formats adapted to the emerging digital ecosystem."
