The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) promotion has broken its gate record after selling over 90,000 tickets for next year's WrestleMania 40 event at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Tickets for the event, which will be held next April, went on sale on August 18 yet reports on the broken record came out on August 19. Tickets for seats close to the ring in the floor section for both nights can cost as much as $10,000.
The previous record was held by WrestleMania 39 in April this year, which the WWE claimed was the “most successful and highest-grossing event in company history." The two-night (April 1 and 2), sold-out event held at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles set new records for viewership, ticket sales, sponsorship, merchandise, and social media.
WrestleMania 40 marks the first time the event has been held in Philadelphia since WrestleMania 15 in 1999. It will take place at the Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles.
Its capacity is usually 71,896 for American football, but it has held as many as 147,763 fans for a Bruce Springsteen concert in 2003.
Earlier this month, the WWE announced its SummerSlam event set multiple new records regarding viewership, gate, sponsorship, and merchandise numbers.
