Multiple records for women’s soccer have been broken during the first two weeks of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup (WWC) in New Zealand and Australia.
By August 4, over 1.71 million tickets had been sold, surpassing pre-event targets, while the tournament has now officially become the best-attended WWC ever.
The 27,706 fans who attended the round of 16 match between the US (reigning champions) and Sweden in Melbourne, Australia, yesterday (August 6) took the tournament’s number past the total of 1,353,506 who watched action during the previous record-setting WWC, in Canada in 2015. The US were knocked out by Sweden, constituting a substantial shock.
The majority of ticket sales have come from Australia.
In terms of average attendance, matches this tournament are attracting 25,476 fans each, an increase of 29% from the equivalent figures at the previous WWC in France four years ago.
