The FIGC, the Italian soccer federation, has partnered with blockchain fintech provider Chiliz to launch a digital fan token on Socios.com, the mobile engagement platform run by Chiliz.
The $ITA fan token has now been officially launched, while the partnership also involves Socios becoming the title sponsor of the women’s Coppa Italia, female soccer’s main domestic cup competition in the country.
Socios and Chiliz users will be able to access exclusive, augmented reality-based Italian soccer content through the partnership.
The FIGC becomes the third national soccer federation – after Argentina’s AFA and Portugal’s FPF – to join the Socios roster.
In total, over 100 top-tier sports bodies and clubs have struck partnerships with Chiliz and Socios in the last couple of years.
Six teams in Italy’s top-tier Serie A men’s league alone have launched similar tokens with Socios, including Napoli, Juventus, Roma and AC Milan.

By GlobalDataOther major European soccer clubs to have begun offering them include Manchester City and Arsenal in England, Spain's Barcelona, and France's Paris Saint-Germain.
The Socios.com fan tokens give fans access to a range of benefits including the right to vote in certain club decisions, VIP rewards and experiences, exclusive club and sponsor promotions, games, competitions and ‘super-fan’ recognition.
Gabriele Gravina, the FIGC’s president, said: “This partnership represents another important step in the development project of Italian soccer because, in addition to expanding the ways of relating with our fans, it will allow us to invest new resources in two fundamental assets such as plant engineering and nurseries.”
Alexandre Drefus, chief executive of both Chiliz and Socios, added: “We are proud and happy to welcome the European champions to our list of global partners, and we will work to give all Azzurri fans around the world the opportunity to interact with their national team, seeing themselves rewarded like never before.”
Off the back of this latest partnership, Socios is planning to open an Italian office in the near future.
As well as the planned Italian office, Socios has recently opened new premises in Spain, Turkey, Brazil and Argentina, and also plans to secure a physical North American presence soon.
