The 2022 London Marathon will take place on 2 October, with the event moved from its traditional April slot for a third successive year.
The organisers have opted for the October date again to give the event the best possible chance of taking place at its full capacity.
Hugh Brasher, event director of London Marathon Events, said: “We are living in a hugely uncertain world – a world where different approaches to managing Covid-19 are being explored and executed.
“The London Marathon is an extraordinary and unique celebration of the family of humankind coming together. We believe that by moving the 2022 event to October we give ourselves the best chances of welcoming the world to the streets of London, enabling tens of millions to be raised for good causes."
Barring any need for postponement, the marathon will return to its traditional time of year in 2023, with a date of 23 April also having been announced.
Last year, the London Marathon was run only as an elite race – without members of the public competing or watching at the roadside, although it was possible to run a marathon locally and to log progress on the event’s mobile app.

By GlobalDataThis year’s event however will welcome back the non-elite race, with up to 50,000 runners expected to participate, which could potentially make it the largest marathon staged anywhere in the world.
Despite its disruption, a number of sponsorship deals have been agreed this year for the London Marathon, with Indian multinational Tata Consultancy Services signed up as a new title sponsor in a six-year deal running from 2022, replacing Virgin Money.
Healthcare company Abbot has extended its partnership of the event until 2024, while Swiss luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer and energy drink brand Lucozade Sport are both on board until 2023.
Lucozade has had a relationship with the marathon for 19 years already, and this extension will make it the race's longest-serving partner.
