The International Padel Federation (FIP) governing body has today unveiled a new inter-continental cup teams competition which will launch in 2025.

The new competition will take place biennially between teams from the Americas and Europe, rotating in terms of hosting between those regions, and the FIP intends for it to be the equivalent of golf’s Ryder Cup and tennis’ Laver Cup.

Men’s and women’s competitions will run simultaneously, with total prize money of €700,000 and equal money to be distributed between the winning men’s and women’s teams.

This competition is being created as part of the sport’s wider efforts to make itself eligible for Olympic inclusion in the next few decades or so – currently, it is not globalized enough, and this new competition is being looked at as the right vehicle to change this impediment.

The competition, which has yet to be formally named, is being organized alongside the Padel Europe and Padel America continental federations.

Tenders for “locations, branding, promoters, and partnerships,” will start shortly, the FIP has stated.

Luigi Carraro, president of the International Padel Federation, has now commented: "The new inter-continental cup competition responds to the incredible worldwide popularity of padel and an unprecedented demand for new competition formats from both established and emerging padel fanbases, players, and partners.

“We cannot wait to realize this competition next year, and already know of enormous demand to host and partner in padel’s equivalent of the Laver and Ryder Cup, which will continue the globalization of padel as we aspire to form part of the Olympic Movement as soon as possible.”

The sport's primary global competition is currently Premier Padel, with that series (through a deal including the FIP) having launched in its current form at the beginning of 2024. The finals of the first Premier Padel season are taking place next month in Barcelona, Spain.

Overall, Premier Padel 2024 has featured 25 tournaments across five continents and 18 countries.
