ABC, Australia’s state broadcaster, has announced that it has secured the radio rights to the 2024 edition of the iconic English tennis tournament Wimbledon.
In partnership with the BBC, its state broadcaster counterpart in the UK, the ABC will present live coverage of the tournament, starting on July 1 with the competition’s opening round, with coverage beginning at 10 PM in Australia’s Eastern Standard Time zone.
The competition, one of tennis’ four Grand Slam majors, will run through July 14 with ABC delivering live commentary, match reports, and player interviews through the tournament derived from its own coverage and that of the BBC.
Coverage will be provided live on ABC radio stations as well as on the broadcaster’s digital platforms such as its ABC Listen app.
Speaking on the announcement, ABC chief content officer Chris Oliver-Taylor stated: “Securing Wimbledon is part of our audio strategy […] to ensure Australians have radio access to the best sporting events in the world.”
ABC agreed a similar deal earlier this year to provide coverage of the Australian Open, another Grand Slam, and in 2023 provided coverage of a number of other major sporting events including cricket's Ashes series and soccer’s Women’s World Cup.
