Lithuanian basketball’s top-tier LKL has announced a new first-of-its-kind partnership with sports data and technology company Genius Sports.
The partnership will see the LKL implement Genius’ AI-powered computer vision solution, providing it with data from a wide range of areas including player performance, optical player tracking, and wider event data.
The LKL is the first basketball league in Europe to implement Genius’ systems, allowing teams to access a loaded dataset of league statistics, broadcast-quality live video production, and a coaching and analysis solution that is already utilized by teams in US basketball’s NBA.
Genius Sports will further implement its AI solutions in LKL broadcasts, adding data, visualizations, graphics, and “sponsorable inventory” to live game footage.
The LKL aims to have all the solutions implemented across the arenas used by its 12 constituent teams by the beginning of the 2024-25 regular season, which typically begins around September.
LKL chief executive Rasa Liumiene stated that the partnership will “enable us jointly to offer LKL clubs, their administration and basketball coaches state-of-the-art tools to enhance performance analysis, power immersive fan experiences, and generate new sponsorship opportunities.”

By GlobalDataJonny Katanchian, Genius Sports head of sports and broadcast, added: “Across on-court performance, digital fan experiences, and new revenue platforms, our technology will transform the LKL’s entire operation, unlocking the full value of tracking data and video through the power of AI.”
Genius is FIBA’s official data and video capture and production partner, as well as the federation’s official innovation and technology services partner from 2025 for a 10-year term.
The LKL is the first FIBA competition to take up the partnership for itself but the aim is for Genius Sports' solutions to sweep across all of FIBA’s basketball competitions internationally.
At the time, FIBA stated its hope that the technology will “transform the entire data and video ecosystem of international basketball.”
Genius Sports has had a partnership with FIBA since 2004 and the two parties have provided over 200 leagues and national federations worldwide with both the FIBA LiveStats and FIBA Organizer offerings, “helping to collect official play-by-play statistics and drive digital transformation at all levels.”
