Fox Sports widens Mexican soccer offering with Xolos and Santos

Fox Sports Latin America, an arm of the international sports broadcaster, now holds media rights to four teams in Mexican soccer’s top-tier Liga MX after concluding new deals with Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles (Xolos) and Santos Laguna.
Under the agreements announced on Monday, the network will have exclusive rights in all markets and across television and digital platforms to the home games of Xolos for five years starting in July 2018 and Santos for five years starting in July 2019.
The deals cover matches in the Liga MX and other Mexican competitions, plus friendlies, with the focus of the Fox Sports coverage to be Latin America and USA.
Last week, Fox concluded renewals with two other top-flight clubs in Leon and Pachuca, both of whose matches will continue to be shown on the network until 2024.
Fox has held rights to Leon’s matches since 2012 and Pachuca’s since 2014.
The network also now shows selected home games of six teams in the Liga MX Femenil, the new Mexican women’s soccer league, in a deal running to 2023.
Through its latest acquisitions, Fox is asserting itself as a viable challenger to the traditional ascendancy in Mexican soccer of commercial broadcasters TV Azteca, which previously showed Xolos and Santa Laguna games, and Televisa.
TV Azteca now only has rights to four Liga MX teams in Atlas, Morelia, Puebla and Veracruz Red Sharks, while Televisa has nine in Cruz Azul, Monterrey, Necaxa, America, Toluca, Tigres, Pumas, Chivas and Lobos BUAP (through Sky).
However, the pair have recently retained rights to the matches of the Mexican national team until 2026.
Federico Alaman, the senior vice-president and general manager of Fox Networks Group Mexico, said of the broadcaster’s latest deals: “The acquisition of these new commercial rights to air the Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles and Santos Laguna clubs’ matches continues to strengthen the rich local football offer of our FOX Sports portfolio. It’s a fact that with strategic allies such as Xolos and Santos, plus our alliance with Pachuca and Leon, we’ll have one of the most solid offers within national football.
“This confirms the commitment we have with our commercial partners of giving the best sports entertainment offer in the industry, to add value, promote sales and contribute to their brands’ positioning.”
