UK to assist Peru with delivering 2019 Pan Am Games
The UK government has signed an agreement with its Peruvian counterpart to assist in the delivery of the Pan American Games in Lima in 2019.
The Government of Peru and the UK’s Department for International Trade unveiled the ‘Special Project for the Planning and Development of the Lima 2019 Games’ in the Peruvian capital yesterday.
Through the agreement, the UK government will share its knowledge and expertise on hosting major events, and assist the organising committee with delivering and organising the games on-budget.
In addition, major infrastructure contracts for the games, including in the areas of management, security and construction, will be open to UK-based companies.
Last week, the International Olympic Committee and the Peruvian government announced that the IOC’s Session, where the host city of the 2024 Olympic Games will be revealed, will be staged in Lima in September, after flash floods in the country had put the Session in doubt.
Across Peru more than 90 people have died since the start of the year as unusually heavy rainfall, often in the shape of flash floods, has caused landslides. Earlier this month, four people drowned after the river Piura in the north of the country burst its banks causing extensive flooding after 15 hours of heavy rain.
The government has said 700,000 people have been left homeless by the floods.
