Profile

The IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011 will be held in Daegu, Korea, from 27th August to 4th September 2011.  The decision to award Daegu the hosting rights to the most prestigious athletics championships was made at the IAAF Council Meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, on 27th March 2007.

The host city of Daegu expects to welcome up to 7,000 participants from the IAAF Family and the media, and it promises to be a showcase of the world’s best athletes from the 213 IAAF Member Federations.  More than just athletics, Daegu 2011 will also be a colourful festivity where participants can marvel at the scenic beauty around Daegu and 5,000 years history of Korea.

Having hosted the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988 and the FIFA World Cup in 2002, Korea will be honoured to host the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011, completing the fabled ‘Triple Crown’ of hosting the three largest sporting events in the world.  In this regard, Daegu has gained invaluable experience in organising several matches of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2003 Daegu Summer Universiade.

In the process of bidding to host the 13th edition of the IAAF World Championships, 800,000 Daegu citizens signed up to support their city’s bid.  Such passionate support will also be evident during the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011, when 7,000 volunteers will be expected to offer their various expertises.

Since 2005 and as part of our promotional efforts to further enhance the interest in athletics, Daegu has hosted two annual events – Colorful Daegu Pre-Championships Meeting and the Daegu International Marathon.  From 2010, the Colorful Daegu Meeting will be one of the prestigious IAAF World Challenge circuits.

For these reasons, we believe that Daegu will be the perfect host city for the IAAF World Championships.  The IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011 will be a legacy for athletics in Korea and in Asia.

The official ideals and slogan of the IAAF World Championships are ‘Dream. Passion. Challenge.’ and ‘Sprint Together for Tomorrow!’
